Free s/w

Just because it is free does not mean it is cheap and nasty!
All these are currently resident on my machine and in fairly regular use, with no problem encountered so far.

IrfanView neat graphics viewer with many facilities found on larger graphic programs
GIMP powerful graphics program
CCleaner great for getting rid of all those temporary files left behind, often unseen
Open Office powerful equivalent to MicroSoft office, but free!  Has word processor, spreadsheet, database and presentation programs
Jalbum An excellent program for creating photo albums, a wide range of styles available, all free.
Winzip For compressing files to send via emails, etc.  It is shareware, so keeps nagging you to buy.
Google
Chrome
A free browser, fairly new, but quite good – it is slimmer than the others.
Google Earth A tremendous programs, the whole earth shown using satellite photos. Locator, zoom lens, route (try New York to London and be amazed).  Many extras available.
Gmail A free email facility provided by Google.  Has the advantage that it can be used in Outlook Express and Thunderbird at no extra charge.  A big advantage is that if you change ISP, you take this email address with you!
Gtalk Google based chat client for one-on-one chats, also enables file transfer, voice chats, voice mail, etc.
FastStone Image
Viewer
A more useful alternative to Windows Explorer for finding images on a drive.
Pop Peeper System tray email notifier, informs you of new mail and which account it is on
Win Patrol Gives you control of startup programs, plus information on other software running on your machine
Audacity audio editing software.

Many more will be added as I find them, or remember them!
